TI: A Re-examination of the Satellite Record of Ozone Over Antarctica Spanning 35 Years

AB: Recently released total ozone data from Nimbus-4 BUV, which was launched in April 1970, and similar data from OMI that was launched on the Aura satellite last year, allows us to track the evolution of the spring-time decline in Antarctic ozone over the last 35 years. The decline of ozone and its subsequent recovery in late spring was well known before the discovery of the "ozone hole", and was attributed to the unique meteorology of the south polar region. Therefore, it was not immediately obvious, at least from the perspective of satellite mapping instruments, that similar spatial features seen in the mid 1980s, though stronger in intensity and depth, were being caused by a completely new mechanism. In this presentation we will focus on the time period preceding the publication of the famous Farman et al. paper in 1985 reporting the decline of ozone at the Halley Bay station in early spring, and examine it from the perspective of past and future satellite measurements of this unique phenomenon.
