The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Earth Sciences (GES) Atmospheric Composition Data and Information Services
Center (ACDISC), fully operational for almost a year, serving Atmospheric Composition (AC) data and providing AC data
exploration services, has become one of the most complete multi-mission measurement-based AC data processing, archive and
distribution systems. ACDISC has made great strides in facilitating science and applications research by, in consultation
with its users, developing innovative tools and data services. That is, as data users become more sophisticated in their
research and more savvy with information extraction methodologies, the GES DAAC has been responsive to this evolution.
With the rapidly increasing amounts of archived AC data from NASA missions: Aura (instruments: OMI, MLS, HIRDLS), Aqua
(MODIS, AIRS), and Terra (MODIS), as well as data from heritage mission/instruments, such TOMS, UARS, and TOVS, tools and
data services that manipulate data and uncover nuggets of information that potentially lead to scientific discovery are
becoming more and more essential. While science research is becoming more specialized, the vast amounts of archived data are
becoming increasingly difficult to exploit. Thus, consistent with the emergence of the discipline specific ACDISC, better
tools and services specific to AC data are provided to quickly distinguish relevant signatures in the data and extract this
information for further study. One such tool, GIOVANNI, is becoming an increasingly popular and efficient data analysis and
visualization tool. GIOVANNI is capable of providing area plots, one or two variable time plots, Hovmoller plots, ASCII
output, image animation, two parameter intercomparisons, two parameter plots, scatter plots (relationships between two
parameters), and temporal correlation maps.
This presentation illustrates the current, and describes the future, capabilities of ACDISC in terms of data exploration,
extraction, and exportation (to users). Audience participants will be surprised how easy it has become to acquire AC data
and the amount of AC information readily available to support their research. Audience participants will also be impressed
how effortlessly they can find their specific data of interest and perform on-the-fly on-line analysis and visualization
utilizing GIOVANNI and other AC data based tools (e.g., for data access and subsetting).
The ACDISC always strives to better understand the data access, usage, and manipulation needs of its community, so that it
can continue to be on the leading edge for user-focused data services. User feedback is greatly appreciated. Complete
