TI: Merged Profile Ozone Data from the SBUV/SBUV2 Series of Instruments

AB: Profile ozone from the SBUV/SBUV2 series of instruments are combined to produce the Profile Merged Ozone Data Set (Profile MOD). The measurements cover the period from late 1978 through the present, with few gaps. Currently, measurements are being made from SBUV/2 instruments on board the NOAA 16, 17 and 18 satellites. All data have been processed using the Version 8 algorithm, which included an improved calibration of data prior to 2003. In general, the instrument intercomparisons during overlap periods are within a couple of percent, but larger differences exist in particular regions and time periods. Except for the recent instruments, the V8 SBUV data sets have been calibrated to the best degree possible using available internal calibration methods. Therefore further refinements require the use of ancillary data sources. In this study we investigate the use of SAGE II data to establish a calibration standard for the series of SBUV profiles. Comparisons with SAGE II profiles show average differences over broad latitude zones are typically within 5-7 percent at all altitudes, but time-dependent comparisons show evidence of seasonal differences and small trends in some cases. We will use the SAGE data to further assess the quality of the Profile MOD data set, and discuss uncertainties in determining the best long-term calibration and implications for trend analysis.
