The current uncertainty in the total bromine loading of the stratosphere
is a significant barrier to the full understanding of the stratospheric
ozone budget. Observed bromine abundances in the stratosphere generally
exceed the levels calculated by current models. Possible explanations
for this discrepancy include contributions from sources not included in
the models, such as very short lived halogens or inorganic bromine
species in the troposphere. This paper describes new total inorganic
bromine (Br_y) abundance estimates infered from observations of upper
stratospheric BrO made by the EOS Microwave Limb Sounder on Aura using
model estimates of the BrO to Bry ratio.
