In November and December of 2003, the 2nd Alliance Icing Research Study (AIRS 2) was conducted in the Great Lakes Region.
NCAR's C-130 was one of the aircraft involved which carried an extensive array of instruments from a number
of the projects participants. Two case studies are presented involving mixed phase clouds, a "warm" case near the melting
level and a "cold" case in a complex of convective towers. A comparison is made of ice crystal and droplet images obtained
with a cloud particle imager (CPI) with liquid and ice water content measurements from a pair of new probes in addition to
dual wavelength lidar measurements. The comparison reveals the temporal and spatial variation of supercooled liquid in mixed
phase clouds as well as the influence of overlying precipitating clouds on riming and ice crystal habit.
