TI: The Influence of Various Cloud Particles on Radiation in the 0.2 to 1.7μm Wavelength Region

AB: Solar transmission measurements of clouds were taken in the 0.2 to 1.7μm region on board a Convair 580 aircraft during the Alliance Icing Research Study II (AIRS II). The measurements were taken with Visible and Near InfraRed (NIR) grated spectrometer systems, which had spectral resolutions of 1 and 3 nm respectively. The measurements were coordinated with an array of instrumentation also onboard, which measured several other in situ cloud properties. The measurement campaign took place during November 2003 to February 2004 and covered a large variety of cloud conditions over the 52.2 hrs of flight time. Presented here is the effect that cloud particle size, phase and shape have on the absorption and scattering of light in the 0.2 to 1.7μm wavelength region. These results are then used to examine their effect on the radiative forcing budget and ultimately climate change.
