TI: Summertime Arctic Mixed-Phase Clouds

3 mixed-phase clouds observed during July of the Surface
Heat Budget of the Arctic experiment are discussed. The analysis
relies on a combination of surface-based remote sensing measurements
and aircraft data. The clouds were multi-layered ice clouds with
liquid layers either embedded within the ice phase (July 8) or overlying
the ice phase (July 15 and 23). The liquid layers have temperatures
ranging between -20 to -5 Celsius. Thin boundary layer clouds or
fog underlie the mixed-phase clouds. The boundary layer clouds are
liquid but possess temperatures close to the surface temperature of
near zero Celsius. The 3 cases all coincide with meltpond-ice surfaces with albedos of approximately 0.5. The cloud
microphysical characteristics, radiative impact, and lifecycles will be discussed.
