AB: Mixing state and size distribution of black carbon (BC) particles in marine boundary layer over the Pacific Ocean downstream of Nagoya-city, Japan were measured during the PEACE-C campaign conducted in March 2004. An airborne laser-induced incandescence instrument, Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) was used for these measurements. The SP2 instrument was calibrated by an Aerosol Particle Mass Analyzer (APM) to quantify BC mass concentration. Coating of the BC particle by non light absorbing aerosol was estimated from the time difference between scattering and incandescence signal measured by SP2. Model calculations to simulate the waveforms of incandescence and light scattering signals from SP2 support this method. Significant evolution of the mixing state and size distribution of BC were observed by sampling plumes with ages between 0-14 hours after emission from Nagoya, indicating that the time constant for BC aging is shorter than one day.
