TI: Composition Modulation of Optical Characteristics of the Asian Continental Aerosol Plume: In Situ Observations at Western North America

AB: Asian continental sources are major contributors to the tropospheric aerosol burden in the Northern Hemisphere. Natural aerosols such as desert dust and biomass smoke are supplemented by anthropogenic aerosols, which include not only primary and secondary aerosols from fossil fuel combustion, but additional increments of soil dust and biomass smoke due to human activity. Accurate assessments of anthropogenic changes to planetary radiation balance need to apportion optical effects both by aerosol type and emission mechanism. Recent research has shown that some North American surface monitoring sites are regularly exposed to free troposphere air. Regressing measured ambient optical conditions (scattering and absorption) during tropospheric exposures against measured aerosol composition data leads to individual optical characterizations for natural dust, biomass smoke, and anthropogenic emissions.
