AB:
Chemical ozone loss and related heterogeneous processes in polar regions are analyzed using results from three secular
54-year WACCM simulations (1950-2003). Meteorological fields, vortex lifetime, and strength of the vortex are compared to
available UKMO meteorological analysis between 1992-2005. For Arctic winters, analyzed features of warm, moderately warm, and
cold years are derived using HALOE satellite measurements and will be compared with similar WACCM Arctic winters.
Accumulated ozone loss derived using ILAS-II measurements will be compared to a typical Antarctic winter of the WACCM model.
Model and
observational differences in both Arctic and Antarctic chemical ozone loss will be highlighted. In addition, the evolution of
the WACCM derived temperature trend and PSC existence in high latitude polar regions will be presented for each simulation,
for the entire 54-year period. Finally, the relation between chemical ozone loss and PSC existence of WACCM results will be
presented and compared with measurements.
