AB: TNO participated to the UAE2 campaign with the retrieval of aerosol properties using AATSR, and its multi-band optical/IR transmissometer which provided horizontal, path-integrated transmission data. The transmissometer emitter and receiver were both installed at a coastal site, with a retro-reflector at a distance of 890 m across the harbor that provided a total transmission path of 1780 m. The wave bands were roughly centered at 0.45. 0.6, 0.9, 1.5, 2.3, 4 and 10 micrometers. The molecular contribution at each wavelength was calculated using MODTRAN using measured meteorological parameters such as relative humidity, air temperature and atmospheric pressure. The results were used to correct the measured transmission to retain the aerosol contribution. The aerosol extinction and its wavelengths dependence were subsequently analyzed to determine the aerosol information content in the transmission data, in particular the added value of the infra-red bands was investigated. Preliminary results indicate the necessity to use a three mode aerosol model is proposed for the retrieval of aerosol information from the transmissometer data over the whole spectral range. Comparisons with sun photometer data indicate the differences between horizontal transmission and the vertical column.
