In response to US Navy requirements for accurate forecasts of visibility, Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center
and the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey have collaborated to develop operational global and regional aerosol forecast
systems and dust enhancement algorithms for the MODIS and SEAWIFS satellite sensor suites. Two years of dust production,
transport and diffusion model forecasts and satellite imagery for Southwest Asia are reviewed, and major dust events are
identified. Models and imagery are crosschecked to minimize false positives and negatives. Events are classified into
categories of dust source region, synoptic flow, and time of year. Specific events are examined in more detail to
demonstrate some characteristics of the event classes and forecast tendencies.
