Direct observations of the Sun at large zenith angles during the second SAGE~III Ozone Loss and Validation Experiment
(SOLVE~II) by several instruments on-board the NASA DC-8 have provided a rich dataset for the retrieval and analysis of
line-of-sight column composition. A multi-spectral fitting technique has been successfully applied to spectral irradiance
measurements made by the Direct beam Irradiance Atmospheric Spectrometer (DIAS) and the Langley Airborne A-Band Spectrometer
(LAABS). O2, O3, and O4 line-of-sight column densities have been retrieved, along with the spectral aerosol optical
depth. Intercomparisons with other measurements and measurement-derived forward-model simulations allow us to examine the
impacts of field inhomogeneity on the interpretation of validation results. Existing and future satellite retrievals and
their validation can potentially be affected by spatial gradients and variability in species composition on both large and
small spatial scales (e.g., high-latitude ozone). In this paper, we examine and quantify the impact of spatial
inhomogeneities on remote sensing observations and retrievals. Implications for data validation are presented.
