AB: In this study, we explore the feasibility of simulation and prediction of ozone and its precursors (NOx, CO) in the metropolitan area surrounding Tokyo (Kanto area), Japan by using a Nested Air Quality Prediction Modeling System (NAQPMS). The NAQPMS employs the variable horizontal grid resolution with nested model grid in 81, 27, 9km, covering from East Asia, Japan around to Kanto metropolitan area. At present, the nesting method is one-way, with the transports of species at the inner model boundaries taken from the outer nested model, except the outmost model boundaries of species are from the output of a global model. MM5 is used to provide meteorological data for the NAQPMS. Preliminary results show that the model can well capture the ozone diurnal/seasonal variation and spatial distribution in Kanto Area. However, the model seems overestimate (underestimate) ozone photochemical production in summer (winter) and underestimates ozone precursors (NOx and CO), especially in winter. In addition to source emission, the meteorological factors also have substantial impacts on species concentrations. For instance, the relation between the diurnal/seasonal variation of mixing layer height and species concentrations is discussed in this study, which is the important cause of inaccurate simulation/prediction of ozone and its precursors.
