The Tropospheric Emissions Spectrometer (TES) launched July 15, 2004 on the EOS Aura spacecraft has acquired sea surface
temperatures as part of all retrievals over the ocean. Sea surface temperature (SST) is both of interest scientifically and
as a stringent test of both forward model and retrieval methodology for the instrument. Initial analysis of the sea surface
temperatures obtained over the period Nov. 4-16, 2004 are presented and compared against standard data sets such as the
Reynolds Optimally Interpolated SST and the RTG SST, and to AIRS, a similar infra-red fourier transform spectrometer.
Results presented include the global map of TES SST, latitudinal SST distribution and average day and night temperatures for
the equatorial, northern mid-latitude and southern mid-latitude regions, the degrees of freedom of signal for SST, bias of
SST vs. retrieved optical depth of clouds in the field of view, and variance of TES SST with respect to the Reynolds weekly
average. It is shown that TES has no systematic errors and a bias of less than 0.1 K in retrieving SST with cloud optical
depths ranging from 0 to much greater than 1.
