AB: SHADOZ (Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes) is part of Aura's constellation of validation efforts. Aura's interest in multi-instrument estimates of tropospheric ozone requires high-quality ozone measurements in the UT/LS. Within this region, primarily below 100 hPa, increases in the frequency of very low (< 20 ppbv) and near-zero ozone mixing ratios have been reported recently (Solomon et al, GRL, in press, 2005). These findings are based on ozone soundings at selected SHADOZ (1998-2004) stations where 1980's and early 1990's profiles are available. The location (preference for the western Pacific "warm pool" region) and morphology of these changes (100-300 hPa location in most cases) suggest perturbations in deep convection. Key meteorological variables corresponding to the low-ozone episodes are examined to evaluate potential processes related to change.
