In-situ measurements of nitric acid and ozone were made from the NASA DC-8 during the Polar Aura Validation Experiment in
January/February 2005. Except in the boundary layer (where nitric acid was enhanced while ozone mixing ratios were low),
there was strong correlation between these two trace gases. The positive correlations between nitric acid and ozone
persisted at all scales, ranging from the 100 second resolution of the nitric acid measurements (approximately 15 horizontal
km or 0.5 vertical km at typical DC-8 velocities) to the entire study region. Spatial variations in the relationship are
examined to assess the impact of stratospheric circulation, stratosphere/troposphere exchange, ozone depletion, and
redistribution of nitric acid (through PSC formation and sedimentation) on the observed distributions of these tracers.
