TI: Flight Performance of a Photolysis/Laser-induced Fluorescence Based Instrument for Measuring HDO and H2O During the Summer 2005 WB-57 AVE_WIIF

AB: Flights during the July 2005 water isotope intercomparison flights (AVE_WIIF) centered around four water isotope instruments. Data from the HOx isotopes instrument (Hoxotope) during AVE_WIIF will be presented and analyzed in the context of the other water and water isotope instruments flown, with emphasis on the flight-to-flight instrument performance. Hoxotope is unique among the water isotope instruments by its use of a fluorescence-based technique; the other instruments are absorption-based. Data from the flights successfully demonstrate the fast time response and high sensitivity of the photolysis/fluorescence technique. The in-flight sensitivity, while below potential, still allowed for the measurement of HDO in the lower stratosphere with a signal to noise ratio of 7/1; with improved laser output, a S/N > 20 is readily obtained. Instrument performance issues during the flights and solutions to those issues will be discussed.
