The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) is a next-generation
passive conically scanning microwave radiometer. It combines both imaging and sounding capabilities of current operational
instruments, SSM/I, SSM/T-1 and SSM/T-2. It also improves the capability of temperature sounding by providing profiles from
the surface up to 70 km altitude with higher spatial resolutions (~37.5 for lower air and ~75 km for upper air). The first
SSMIS was launched on 18 October 2003. During the SSMIS Calibration/Validation (Cal/Val) period, Aerospace mobile lidar was
deployed at Barking Sands, Kauai to provide high accuracy measurements of atmospheric profiles. Sounding data from
operational RAdiosonde OBservation (RAOB) network, which is globally distributed, were collected by Aerospace personnel at
Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA). Collocated and coincident microwave radiance data from the DMSP SSMIS, SSM/I, SSM/T-1 and
SSM/T-2 were also collected for continuous one-year period. Radiative transfer calculations have been performed using
profiles measured from lidar and RAOB. The paper presents comparison results of simulated and observed microwave radiance
for moisture data. The consistency between space and ground measured moisture data and radiative transfer model will be
discussed.
