Launched into orbit onboard the Aqua spacecraft in May 2002, NASA's Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS)
offers an unparalleled global view of tropospheric trace gases on a daily basis. In this presentation we will focus on
retrievals of tropospheric carbon monoxide (CO) from AIRS spectra acquired during NASA's Intercontinental
Chemical Transport Experiment (INTEX-A) and the International Consortium on Atmospheric Research on Transport and
Transformation (ICARTT) from June 1 through August 16, 2004. We will present comparisons of AIRS CO retrievals to in situ
measurements from INTEX-A and ICARTT aircraft as well as correlations with aerosol optical depth retrievals from the MODIS
instrument also onboard Aqua and correlations with other AIRS retrieval products. AIRS retrieval profiles and information
content including the verticality of AIRS measurements illustrate both the vertical and horizontal motions of CO in the
troposphere. In addition to tracking the motions of plumes from the extensive Alaskan/Yukon fires, we will present evidence
for CO transport across the Pacific basin from Asian sources to North America. If time permits, additional AIRS CO
retrievals documenting transpacific CO transport in the springtime could be shown in preparation for the upcoming INTEX-B
(March-May 2006).
