TI: Ice Nucleation by Organics at the Molecular Level

AB: Within the scope of indirect aerosol effect mechanisms, those involving ice are thought to be rather important, yet essentially unquantified. Cloud models which predict the number concentrations and sizes of ice particles are now common, yet the microphysics used in these models is typically of a rough and approximate nature - heterogeneous nucleation of ice being among the rougher and more controversial treatments. We report results of infrared spectroscopy applied to water samples undergoing catalyzed freezing by some organics. The results suggest a freezing mechanism where structural changes occurring in both the organic and the adjacent layer of water play a role in the freezing. We will discuss the results in the context of popular theories of ice nucleation, and less popular ones as well.
