The Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) data collected by various european networks of ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS)
stations have been made available to the operational meterological centers in near-real time since 2004, thanks to the
efforts of the Targeting Optimal Use of Global Positioning System Humidity measurements in meteorology (TOUGH) project. This
paper presents forecast impact trials of ZTD data from such networks in the global Four-Dimensional Variational (4DVAR)
Integrated Forecasting System (IFS)-Arpege. We describe here our implementation of the ZTD assimilation, as well as the
specific pre-processing that we developed for the ZTD data, including quality control and observation error estimation.
Results obtained from forecast trials and showing the impact of the ZTD data on the forecasts will also be presented.
