Comparisons of winter, stratospheric temperatures are conducted using three operational weather assimilation models (European
Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), United Kingdom Meteorological Office (MetOffice) and National Center for
Environmental Prediction Reanalysis (NCEP)) and Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) radio occultation measurements.
Comparisons are used to quantify the effect of known changes in the models, and determine any inter-annual variability, and
biases of the models. Comparisons are restricted to within the Nash polar vortex edge in both hemispheres, where important
temperature dependant processes (ie. PSC formation and ozone depletion) occur, and validations are rare and sparsely
distributed. The CHAMP RO data also are well suited for comparing with the model data, as they are not assimilated into the
models. Four seasons are compared in the Northern Hemisphere (2001/2 - 2004/5), and three in the Southern Hemisphere (2002 -
2004). Model data are interpolated in space and time to the CHAMP measurement locations, and both the model and CHAMP data
are interpolated to a common pressure grid ranging from 100 to 10 hPa to conduct the comparisons. Comparisons are shown as a
function of latitude and temperature.
