AB: The tropopause is one of the most basic features of the temperature structure of the earth's atmosphere. During the last two decades, several studies have been performed leading to tropopause climatologies from different data sources. The most important data source for the determination of tropopause parameters is radiosondes. However, one major deficiency of this dataset is its lack of global coverage, especially on sea areas. GPS radio occultation (RO) technique has been observing the global high-resolution datasets of temperature, pressure, and refractivity profiles in the atmosphere. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of the global tropopause characteristics, seasonal, and the latitudinal, longitudinal structure of the tropical tropopause is presented based on the CHAMP and SAC-C satellite RO measurements. We used the dataset collected for the period mid- 2001 to December 2004. Comparison of the radiosonde and GPS temperature measurements indicated good agreement. The difference between GPS and radiosonde temperature profiles is 0.5 K (1.5 K) at altitudes below (above) the tropopause altitude. Correlation between CHAMP and SAC-C tropopause parameters are also discussed.
