TI: High Spectral Resolution Infrared Cloud Measurements from the NPOESS Airborne Sounder Testbed-Interferometer (NAST-I) During Several Satellite Calibration/Validation Experiments

AB: High spectral resolution interferometer measurements from both aircraft and ground based infrared sensor have been used to study cirrus cloud optical properties. These instruments include the NPOESS Airborne Sounder Testbed- Interferometer (NAST-I), the Scanning High-resolution Interferometer Sounder (S-HIS), and the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI). The high spectral resolution allows measurement, between gaseous emission lines within the infrared atmospheric window (8-12 micron), of the cirrus cloud spectral emission signature. When combined with lidar or radar measured cloud boundaries and the atmospheric state, these data can be used to discern the cloud optical depth and bulk effective particle size. We will focus on two cloud cases which occurred during the European AQUA Thermodynamic Experiment (EAQUATE) and the Mixed-Phase Arctic Cloud Experiment (M-PACE) for flights on 6 September 2004 and 17 October 2004, respectively. Both campaigns were conducted over ground-based validation sites which included a suite of atmospheric sensors. The EAQUATE campaign was designed to study the atmosphere using aircraft and ground based instruments to demonstrate their benefit in validating hyperspectral satellite sounding observations. Results for the 6 September 2004 case were for an aircraft sortie carrying both NAST-I and S-HIS instruments that was based out of Naples, Italy. M-PACE was proposed to collect a focused set of observations needed to advance the understanding of mixed-phase arctic clouds, including cloud microphysical processes and radiative transfer through these clouds. Aircraft measurements (S-HIS) were based out of Fairbanks, Alaska.
