Measurements from spaceborne backscattered ultraviolet (BUV) sensors like the National Polar-orbiting Operational
Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) instrument are relatively insensitive to the
amount of ozone in the troposphere. The error due to this insensitivity is one of the largest components in the total error
budget for such an instrument and, unless accounted for, would lead to OMPS retrievals that did not meet the NPOESS precision
specification. A technique to correct for this insensitivity has been incorporated into the OMPS total column ozone
retrieval algorithm. The technique relies on determining the efficiency of measuring tropospheric ozone for a given
retrieval. An estimate of the tropospheric ozone amount is then obtained by subtracting the stratospheric component from an
initial retrieval of total column ozone amount. The stratospheric component is determined using independent ozone profile
information obtained from the OMPS limb-retrieval sensor-algorithm system. The tropospheric efficiency is used to correct the
tropospheric ozone estimate, which is then, in turn, used to correct the total column ozone retrieval. We will provide
details on the technique as well as simulation results indicating the improvement in total column ozone retrievals using the
technique. We will also provide estimates of the remaining tropospheric ozone errors after our correction is applied.
