The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Earth Sciences (GES) Atmospheric Composition Data and Information Services Center
(ACDISC) (http://acdisc.gsfc.nasa.gov/ or google on 'acdisc'), known for its development and deployment of responsive, user
oriented, data management and value added data tools, has implemented a visualization and analysis tool that is rapidly
receiving much use by the Atmospheric Composition (AC) community. Giovanni, as it is called, has been developed in
consultation with members of the user community, requesting quick search, subset, and display capabilities for their specific
data of interest. Giovanni is capable of providing area plots, time-series plots, Hovmoller plots, ASCII output, image
animation, parameter intercomparisons (time-series, scatter plots, correlations, etc.).
Giovanni is designed to be able to evolve with new science and applications data analysis needs. The interest generated in
Giovanni has resulted in a long list of requested new capabilities, currently being worked off. In addition, Giovanni is
designed for reuse simply by changing the input data parameters. Thus far, Giovanni has been reused 5 times for the
atmospheric data community, encompassing data from the Aura (instruments: OMI, MLS, HIRDLS), Aqua (MODIS, AIRS), and Terra
(MODIS) missions, as well as data from heritage mission/instruments, such TOMS, UARS, and TOVS. Thus, adapting Giovanni to
NPOESS Environmental Data Records (EDRs) is quite feasible, and it is a very logical thing to do.
Giovanni will not only provide the aforementioned capabilities on VIIRS, CMIS, CrIS, OMPS, APS, and ERBS data, but it will
also provide additional features to perform initial validation analysis (e.g., intercomparisons between VIIRS and MODIS),
cross instrument data continuity analysis, and remote data access (i.e., no need for costly data duplication), to mention a
few.
The ACDISC always strives to better understand the data access, usage, and manipulation needs of its community, so that it
can continue to be on the leading edge for user-focused data services. User feedback is greatly appreciated.
