AB: Satellite cloud observations and retrievals are affected by various factors. Some are related to the geometries of the navigation instruments, others seem to be dependent on the intrinsic properties of the clouds and their interaction with the solar incident radiation. The geostationary satellite GMS-5 is used for the retrieval of cloud characteristics in the East-China Sea area. For validation purpose, the physical and optical parameters obtained are compared to those of a higher spatial resolution satellite, the polar orbiting TERRA-MODIS. This comparison shows some serious cloud optical depth (COD) discrepancies between both satellites. The GMS-5 data so often shows lower values. To understand the reasons of these differences, various factors likely to influence satellite cloud data accuracy were investigated. Results of this investigation show that three-dimensional radiative effects and cloud thermodynamic phase variation appear to be the most influential. At sunlit cloud sides, as well as in water clouds, the COD discrepancies are limited. Shadow cloud faces and ice clouds seem to enhance these COD differences. Investigations on the mechanisms governing the behavior of the clouds suggest that GMS-5 retrieval of cold clouds over shadow surfaces may lack accuracy and significantly contribute to the underestimation of these COD data.
