Longterm variations in surface solar insolation affects our climate. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) covers the
solar spectrum from 400 nm to 700 nm, and contributes about 40% to the total shortwave radiation at the surface. PAR data
from SeaWiFS over the global ocean surface are available since the fall of 1997. The SeaWiFS instrument is rigorously
calibrated to maintain its on-orbit radiometric stability, including monthly lunar calibrations and daily solar calibrations.
Seven-years of SeaWiFS PAR data are analyzed and the preliminary results show no statistically significant temporal trend in
the PAR over the ocean from 50oS to 50oN. Time series of SeaWiFS PAR will be analyzed for other regions and compared with
the time series of top-of-atmosphere shortwave irradiance from CERES.
