The High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS) instrument was launched on the Aura spacecraft in July 2004. During
launch an unknown event occurred to cause a blockage in the optical train of the telescope. This obstructed the view of the
Earth's limb and space for all but a fraction of the optical beam width at a single azimuth angle 47 degrees
from the orbital plane. It also blocked the view of the in-flight calibrator. In addition, motions of the scan mirror
caused the blockage, believed to be a piece of Kapton sheeting used to prevent contamination, to oscillate, modulating the
received signal.
In order to use the data from this limited aperture, 4 corrections had to be developed, tested, and applied to convert the
radiances from the atmosphere and the Kapton into corrected atmospheric radiances that could be input to the original
retrieval processor. These corrections were: a revision to the calibration algorithm and procedure; the removal of the
signal perturbations due to the Kapton oscillation; removal of the signal coming from the Kapton; and a correction for the
effect that only a fractional area is open. The development of these corrections will be descrobed.
Retrieved results from the application of these corrections will be presented. They include temperatures and ozone amounts
that can be shown by comparison to other measurements to be accurate, have high vertical resolution, and to have a precision
of 0.5K and 5%, respectively. Aerosol channel measurements provide maps of PSCA's and cirrus cloud coverage.
Retrievals of the other species will also be shown, and some initial scientific applications will be presented.
