AB: The High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite is a very high vertical resolution infrared limb scanner with ~ 1.2 km field-of-view projection at the limb. Completion of a vertical scan occurs in ~10 s, and spacing between profiles is as short as 80 km. We examine short vertical scale structures in the HIRDLS data and report on properties of gravity waves observed in these data. Individual profiles are first analyzed with a wavelet analysis that gives vertical wavelength and wave phase as a function of height along the profiles. The wavelet covariance spectrum between adjacent profiles gives the amplitude and phase change between adjacent profiles for horizontally-coherent short vertical scale features. From the phase change, we compute an estimate of the horizontal wavelength along the line joining the two profiles. We compile daily maps of global properties of gravity waves in HIRDLS data at altitudes throughout the stratosphere, and compare these to previous measurements for validation. In addition, we examine individual wave events that reveal the intermittency in wave occurrence and their properties that provide important clues to wave forcing mechanisms. The HIRDLS measurements provide unprecedented vertical, horizontal, and temporal resolution of gravity waves in the stratosphere.
