The MLS instrument on board the Aura satellite launched on 15 July 2004 is
providing daily near global upper tropospheric humidity and cloud ice
profile data. MLS has observed one annual cycle
of humidity and cloud ice in the tropical upper troposphere and lower
stratosphere (UTLS). The new Aura MLS measurements are compared to UARS HALOE
and UARS MLS humidity measurements and to a model that incorporates
resolved cloud physics and parameterized convection. Model and observations are
applied to determining the relative importance of convective and in situ
processes in regulating the annual cycles of humidity and cloud ice in the
tropical UTLS.
