The nitrate radical (NO3) is a key component of nighttime chemistry in the troposphere and is responsible for the
non-potochemical production of various radicals. It has been measured several times in the boundary layer using the classic
method of Long Path Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (LP-DOAS). Later, Multi-AXis (MAX)-DOAS measurements could
detect vertical NO3-Profiles during sunrise by evaluating straylight spectra.
We succeeded to combine the principle of MAX-DOAS with the MiniDOAS method. MiniDOAS uses miniature spectrometer for the
measurement of straylight spectra, aiming for an optmized "result/effort" ratio. We will present the results of field
measurements performed in summer 2005 in Jerusalem and in the Jordan Valley. Vertical profiles of NO3 have been found
repeatedly in the urban environment of Jerusalem. Also in the Jordan Valley east of Jerusalem, there was evidence for NO3.
This gives reason for the discussion of transport of a polluted plume. Finally, a comparison with simultaneous LP-DOAS
measurements of nitrogen oxides will be presented.
