As cyclones are responsible for a large fraction of heat and moisture transport into the Arctic, variability and systematic
changes in the cyclones may lead to large climate variabilty within the Arctic. Recent results have indicated that a large
fraction of the cyclones found in the Arctic originated outside the Arctic domian and traveled into the Arctic, linking
extratropical circulation variability closely to Arctic climate variability.
Based on NCEP and ERA40 6 hourly vorticity fields, northern Hemisphere cyclones have been tracked using a state of the art
tracking algorithm. Results for cyclones traveling into the Arctic will be presented. Emphasis will be placed on the
comparison between the ERA40 and NCEP cyclone tracks, their regional variability and long term trends.
As the main driver of moisture transport into the Arctic, cyclone variability plays a key role in the Arctic hydrological
cycle and is influencing the Arctic radiation budget. The relationship between the seasonal cyclone activity and moisture
transport and its implication for Arctic climate variability will be discussed.
