AB: The maintenance mechanism and seasonality of the Scandinavian pattern (SCA) as well as its possible impact on the Eurasian climate are investigated based on the long-term monthly data. The upstream portion of the SCA pattern, which extends from the North Atlantic to the Scandinavian peninsula, is mainly forced by high-frequency transient eddies, i.e., North Atlantic storm activities, and partly sustained by the Rossby wave propagation. The downstream part manifests itself as an almost pure downstream propagation of the Rossby wave packet. The SCA pattern shows an apparent seasonality in the wave train orientation and the wavelength. Such seasonality is discussed in terms of the position of transient eddy forcing, the waveguide and the stationary wavenumbers. In cold seasons, the maintenance of this pattern causes a cold air accumulation over the west and central Siberia and Mongolia. In different months, the SCA pattern is responsible for the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly in the North Atlantic Ocean.
