AB: Hydrocarbons in the atmosphere act as precursors in the formation of tropospheric ozone and visibility reducing fine aerosols. In examining their effects on regional chemistry and pollution events, considerable uncertainties exist in our understanding of the relative contributions from different sources and classes of compounds as well as their transport from other regions. As part of the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation field campaign during the summer of 2004, volatile organic compounds, including methane, C2-C10 nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) and oxygenated volatile organic compounds, were measured at two northern New England sites: Thompson Farm, a rural site 25 km from the coast of New Hampshire, and Appledore Island located 10 km off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire. A comprehensive comparison of the reactivities with hydroxyl radical (OH) will be presented for these two coastal sites along with an examination of the implications for the sources and transport of these compounds to this region. Biogenic NMHCs such as isoprene and the monoterpenes were significant components of the total reactivity at both locations. However, very different overall reactivity signatures were observed for each site. At Thompson Farm, the biogenic hydrocarbons comprised the bulk of the reactivity with OH reflecting local sources from New Hampshire and Maine forests. More evenly distributed contributions to reactivity from longer lived anthropogenic hydrocarbons were observed at Appledore Island indicating that air masses were more chemically processed and had significant anthropogenic input from the Northeast region. Enhanced mixing ratios of propane, C5 alkanes and C5 alkenes in polluted air masses encountered at both Thompson Farm and Appledore Island likely reflect LPG and gasoline vapor release from the nearby Portsmouth/Kittery region.
