The national air quality standard for ozone is 1-hour average of 120 ppbv. In Seoul, it is most frequent in June the peak
concentrations of ozone exceeded 120 ppbv. To understand the photochemical ozone production in Seoul, intensive measurements
were made in the northeastern part of Seoul during May-June, 2004. Together with ozone and its precursors, H2O2 and other
radical precursors such as formaldehyde and HONO were measured. During the whole course of experiment, we encountered several
high ozone episodes over 120 ppbv and observed H2O2 concentrations up to 6 ppbv. In general, H2O2 variations showed a
maximum in the late afternoon. However, high levels of H2O2 were occasionally detected in the morning or in the evening. With
measurement results of other species, it suggests that radical sources other than ozone, for example HONO or the reaction of
alkenes with ozone, possibly played a role in the formation of H2O2 in Seoul metropolitan air. Detailed results will be
presented in the meeting.
