Measurements of PAN, ozone and their main precursors, such as CO, NOx(NO + NO2), VOCs, and UV radiation were made at urban
area of north central Seoul during the intensive photochemical monitoring program held in the May and June of 2004 at
downtown of Seoul, Korea. Average mixing ratios of PAN were lied between 0.2 to 0.6 ppbv, with up to 10.5 ppbv in high
ozone episode day. There were pronounced diurnal cycle with maximum in late afternoon. However, no significant degrees of
correlation were found between PAN and ozone concentrations at this site except during the high ozone episode days. This
inconsistency between these two photochemical species induced from common precursors, NOx and VOCs was mainly due to a direct
effect of ozone titration by freshly emitted NO. On the other hand, good correlation was observed in daily maxima of PAN
and Ozone. The measured levels of PAN in Seoul were considerably lower than those of other cities. The behaviors of PAN
vs (NO/NOx) suggested that continuous and large amount of NO emission often kept the level of PAN low compared with
measurements in other big cities.
