AB: Anthropogenic and biogenic VOC's can act to increase levels of ozone and other pollutants in the troposphere. Most previous studies of the role of VOC's in the tropospheric ozone budget have focused on anthropogenic emissions; however, biogenic VOC's also play a significant role. This study used a two-box urban tropospheric chemistry model to analyze the effect of biogenic isoprene, which is a highly reactive alkene that is emitted into the trophosphere in greater quantities than any other non-methane VOC. It was found that isoprene, under certain conditions, can act to suppress the hydroxyl radical and increase ozone and oxygenated VOC's simulating a reduction of air quality in cities and their environments.
