AB: During the July-August, 2004 ICARTT (International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation) study an intensive, coordinated ozonesonde campaign was carried out over the US and southeastern Canada. We use daily, quasi-synoptic profiles from four sites in the IONS (INTEX Ozonesonde Network Study) data set: Trinidad Head, CA; Pellston, MI; Narragansett, RI; NOAA Ship Ron Brown, operating in the Gulf of Maine. We also make use of gridded meteorological fields at hourly intervals from the Rapid Update Cycle analyses of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction. The influence of nearby convective lofting on the tropospheric ozone profile is assessed using static stability parameter distributions and wind shear data. The focus is on a subset of the profiles where thermodynamic and wind data indicate that the gridded meteorological analysis is consistent with the observed distributions. The role of stratospheric influence in the frequently encountered cases of enhanced upper tropospheric O3 is assessed using tropopause conformation, humidity and potential temperature data intercomparisons with meteorological analysis results, together with analysis of potential vorticity distributions. The relative importance of these factors will be contrasted with long-range transport in the context of large-scale meteorological systems.
