AB: During the ICARTT 2004 summer field campaign, a number of key pollutant chemical species were measured from an aircraft platform (Convair 580). Horizontal passes through towering cumulus at different altitudes showed distinct changes in pollutant concentrations. These changes correlated well with simultaneous fast-response vertical gust measurements. As expected, the more insoluble species (eg. CO) behaved differently from the soluble and reactive species (e.g. SO2, peroxides). Trace gas concentrations in the cloud interstitial air were higher than in the clear air adjacent to cloud; in particular, in-cloud CO was very similar to cloud base CO. Ratios of SO2 to CO in and around cloud will be examined in several cases to determine the amount of SO2 to SO4 conversion through in-cloud processes. Also, the vertical mass transport of some measured species by clouds from the boundary layer into the free troposphere will be estimated.
