During the summers of 2002 and 2004, intensive field campaigns were devoted to studying regional air quality in the
Northeastern U.S.; the New England Air Quality Study in 2002 and a collage of experiments conducted under the auspices of the
International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) in 2004. This paper will compare
meteorological controls on regional air quality during the two field campaign seasons. An overview of the synoptic weather
patterns that existed during the two summers will be presented. In addition, cluster analyses of back trajectories
calculated from data provided by networks of wind profilers and ocean buoys that were deployed for the field campaigns and/or
for operational purposes will be used to determine how transport pathways for air pollution differed between the two
summers. Regional air quality maps provided by the Environmental Protection Agency and ground-based air chemistry
observations provided by the University of New Hampshire will be used to catalog air pollution events.
