TI: The Contribution of Episodic Flux to Long-Range Air Pollution Transport

AB: Both mean and episodic fluxes contribute to the total transport of air pollution on large scales, but the relative importance of these two components has not been well characterized. This study uses the Model of Ozone and Related Tracers (MOZART) to quantify the fraction of total transport due to short-term variability versus monthly or seasonal mean flow. We focus on carbon monoxide (CO), tropospheric ozone (O3), peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), and sulfate aerosols. Fluxes of these species into and out of North America, Europe, and Asia will be evaluated. The relative importance of episodic and mean fluxes varies as a function of species, region, season, and altitude. Understanding the general characteristics of these fluxes will aid in identifying key dynamical processes that affect trace gas and aerosol abundances in the Northern Hemisphere.
