TI: Characteristic Variations Of Ozone At Ieodo Ocean Research Station

AB: We examined seasonal and interannual variations of ozone concentrations and their relation to the meteorological parameters at Ieodo Ocean Research Station (36 m above sea level, 32.07°N, 125.10°E) in Korea. Measurements have been made since June 2003.
The ozone was observed to be highly variable during the period and significantly impacted by long-range transport and regional scale air mass modification processes. From June 2003 to May 2005, the mean and median concentrations of ozone were 49.3 ppbv and 50.4 ppbv, respectively. The values were higher than those observed in Jeju Island, Korea. The ozone concentrations were lowest in summer and remained high during other seasons. The high concentrations of ozone were influenced by the continental outflows, mostly from China during winter to spring and Korea during fall. And the low concentrations of ozone during summer were due to frequent rain and southerly wind from the Pacific Ocean. Compared to seasonal variations, the amplitude of diurnal variations is not distinct (~4 ppbv) during the period, even though the ozone concentrations reached maximum around 7-8 a.m. and minimum around 3-4 p.m. The Ieodo Ocean Research Station will serve as a baseline observatory to monitor the long-range transport of air pollutants from Asia continent.
