AB: Two satellite-based instruments capable of retrieving atmospheric temperature with high vertical resolution (~1 km) are currently in orbit: the AIRS infrared passive sounder onboard NASA's Aqua platform, and the NASA Global Positioning System receivers onboard the CHAMP and SAC-C spacecraft. The physics underlying these measurements are fundamentally different, as are the retrieval algorithms, providing an opportunity to objectively study the characteristics of these measurements globally, so that they can be used to greater advantage in scientific studies. We show results of a detailed comparison between nearby soundings from 2003, performing both case studies of individual profiles and computing height-resolved differences as a function of month and latitude, for pressures in the range ~15-400 mb. The retrievals are also compared to nearby radiosondes (when available) and high-resolution ECMWF analyses. Particular attention is focused on possible variations of the differences with respect to the vertical structure of the tropopause. We use the multi-instrument capabilities of the GENESIS 2 science information system, including collocation, subsetting and graphical capabilities, to focus on the scientific aspects of the comparisons and to avoid needing to learn details of the data formats.
