Climate impacts from interactions between anthropogenic added aerosol and its environment introduce one of the largest
uncertainties in climate modelling also because observational evidence (e.g. tracks) and process understanding (e.g.
injection experiments at cloud base) have a local flavour which not necessarily applies to the regional resolution in global
modelling, particularly if a temporal responses must be considered. This raises questions, how appropriate are as the
parameterizations in global modelling, which often address only a sub-set of all possible feedbacks. To get a general idea,
if models get it right with respect to aerosol-environment interactions, we turn to available long-term satellite data sets
(e.g. MODIS, MISR, POLDER), which provide (quasi-) simultaneous (or associated) retrievals for aerosol properties and other
environmental properties of interest. Based on data-pairs, associated in space and time, monthly correlation statistics at
different horizontal scales are explored to establish global correlation fields. While interpretations of these correlations
at times can be a challenge, the correlations clearly set constraints that need to be met by global modelling, if the
dominant interactions are properly considered. The correlations in particular focus on aspects of the influence of
anthropogenic aerosol on the hydrological cycle (e.g. clouds and precipitation). Finally, correlations fields of simulations
with aerosol modules of the 16 models that participated in the AeroCom exercise will be introduced and larger discrepancies
to satellite data based correlations will be discussed.
