The NPOESS Era will see the replacement of all the current instruments on the national operational polar platforms with more
advanced sensors that offer new capabilities for cloud remote sensing. For example, the 5 channel imager with a spatial
resolution of 4 km will be replaced with a 22 channel imager with a spatial resolution of 0.75 km and the infrared sounder,
which is currently a 20 channel radiometer, will be replaced by a hyper spectral interferometer. In addition, a conical
scanning microwave imager will for the first time be flown operationally next to an advanced imager and hyper spectral
sounder.
This talk will give an overview of the new capabilities for cloud remote sensing during the NPOESS era. A review of the
planned cloud products will be presented. The expected deficiencies in the cloud products derived from each sensor alone
will be reviewed and the benefits of combining data from multiple NPOESS sensors for cloud remote sensing will be discussed.
Lastly, initial results from an attempt to make physically consistent time series of cloud products NPOESS and its
predecessor, POES, will be discussed.
