Due to significant atmospheric loadings of agricultural dust aerosols, the aerosol's ability to contribute significantly to
climate forcing on a regional to global level has been a topic of recent interest. Efforts have been made to quantify both
the aerosol extinction of the total aerosol population and the hygroscopic and chemical properties of individual particles at
a cattle feedyard near Canyon, Texas. Measurements of aerosol extinction are made using open-path transmissometry. Our
results show that extinction varies significantly with relative humidity. To further explore the hygroscopic nature of the
particles, size-resolved aerosol samples are collected using a cascade impactor system (7 stages ranging from 0.6 micron to
16 micron diameter) and hygroscopicity measurements are conducted on these using an Environmental Scanning Electron
Microscope (ESEM). Complimentary determination of the elemental composition of individual particles is performed using
Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. Results of the optical properties, hygroscopicity and chemical composition of aerosols
will be presented and atmospheric implications discussed.
