Upper tropospheric observations of carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3) from the EOS MLS onboard Aura are examined for
long-range transport of pollution in the upper troposphere. MLS retrievals of CO and O3 from August 2004-August 2005 are
analyzed and compared with results from the GEOS-Chem global 3D chemical transport model driven by assimilated meteorology.
We focus our analysis on the seasonal variability of long-range pollution transport in the upper troposphere, with particuar
attention to convective outflow of anthropogenic and biomass burning emissions. Deep convective regions are identified with
outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and convective cloud top pressures. Isentropic trajectories are used to better understand
the main transport pathways. We also examine the CO-O3 correlation to estimate O3 production efficiency and to separate out
stratospheric influence.Additionally, we compare the seasonal distributions of upper tropospheric CO and cloud ice water
content(IWC) measured by MLS to gain insights into the potential impact of convective pollution on high (cirrus) clouds.
