The main science goals of EOS MLS are to study the stratosphere and upper troposphere. However, the instrument scans up to an
altitude of over 92 km, providing information on a number of molecular species in the upper mesosphere. In many cases, the
signals in this region are small and can lead to biases in the standard retrieval; radiance averages are explored here as an
alternative analysis method. In this presentation, we examine briefly all of the species for which MLS produces an
observable signal at 80 km: H2O, CO, HCl, OH, HO2, O3. The seasonal cycles and day/night differences will be
presented and compared with 2-D model output and earlier measurements, where these exist. The HCl data are the first daily
global observations of the seasonal cycle of this species in this region of the atmosphere.
